Open Question: Help placing my severely brain injured adult son?
Dear Somebody/Anybody who might care,
My name is Sandra Tyler. Two years ago my 23 year old son was a passenger in a horrible car accident in which he sustained a severe traumatic brain injury. He has recovered, but was left in a wheelchair, and unable to do anything for himself. He cannot use the bathroom or walk. He has short-term memory loss and angry rages. He is not paralyzed. His brain just does not control his body. He can hold a fork and feed himself. Other than that he is left being aware of his situation, now 25, sitting in a wheelchair in a nursing home with elderly people. He hates his situation. He is angry. He has no impulse control, and when he gets mad he swings and hits or bites. He is like a 2-year-old grown man.
After he came out of a coma I brought him home. I had no previous experience dealing with the handicapped and completely ignorant about traumatic brain injuries. I have learned fast.
During the 7 months I had him at home he has broken my furniture, given me black eyes, bite mark bruises up and down my arms when I try to lift him. He has fallen many times in my home because his wheelchair cannot fit in my bathroom. He has seizures. I live paycheck-to-paycheck and cannot afford to make my house handicapped assessable and don’t have enough bedrooms. He had to share a room with my 17-year-old son who was interrupted from sleep nightly by my son’s yelling and wall-banging. Yet he never complained even though he was sleep deprived. I had to shield my young daughter from his self stimulating in my living room, which I cannot control he goes off in a rage if I tell him to stop. I fear his rages and I cannot control them. He cannot be left alone for 1 minute.
I was a prisoner in my own home being abused by my son. I could not attend my younger childrens school activities or give them the attention they too deserve.
I finally made the extremely difficult decision to place him in a nursing home after he started having seizures. At that point, I was so relieved that he was being cared for 24/7 by medical staff and extremely happy to have my life back and for my other children. We could then visit Frankie and give him quality time and the love we feel for him instead of over-worked, exhausted, afraid to touch him for being hit resentment. It was working out wonderfully.
When I placed him I had the Virginia Brain Injury Association do an in-service to educate the staff at the nursing home on behavior issues associated with TBI.
Now, after not yet a year, he has hit an elderly woman in the face and yells and screams and has tried to commit suicide and the hospital is kicking him out. They have to return him to my home. I have been in touch with my state long term care ombudsman to help me find another hospital that will accept him. That is proving to be almost impossible. No place will take someone who is violent. Or if they will, they do not accept Medicaid.
You see before his accident my son had been living on his own for 2 years, worked fulltime and had his own apartment. A very responsible young man. But he had no health insurance. So after his accident he w as placed on Medicaid. No worthwhile brain injury-related hospitals accept Medicaid. If there is one, I do not know where it is. I have spent hours and hours researching, as well as the lady in Richmond helping me find a place.
Now, the hospital tells me on June 15, they are sending him to my home to live. That is impossible for me. I have a full-time job that I cannot afford to lose, 2 younger children, and a husband. I cannot afford to take care of all of his needs, nor can I ensure his safety. He is a lot heavier than I am. I cannot lift him alone and I am afraid of being hit or bit. He is a massive fall risk here and I am not a nurse. Last time I almost lost my job for missing days, my 2 younger children have threatened to go live with their father, and my husband almost left me. My family has been happy again since he has been in the nursing home. I can attend outings with my son and daughter and actually pay attention to them and they love it.
This is traumatic enough on my son, but to ruin all our lives is beyond my comprehension. There has to be a place for him somewhere. I need help finding it. I just can’t meet his needs in my home. And no one cares about the needs of my other children or my need of my job.
Can you PLEASE help me??
Voting Question: Should my husband say something or not?
My husband travels for his job and is on the company insurance as he drive a company car. He was traveling back from Boston through Virginia and he got a speeding ticket. They didn’t ask for insurance info, only license and registration. Should he tell his boss or not?And if they didn’t ask for insurance info, will it go on the company insurance or not? Thanks.
Resolved Question: I’m from Pennsylvania and would like to purchase a vehicle in Virginia; need info?
Can you give me any information on the process of purchasing an out of state vehicle: vehicle temp tags, insurance, title and/or any other information? Also would it be possible to ask the seller if he can leave his tags on his car and I can mail them back to him when I arrive in PA.
