Open Question: Am I over reacting to boyfriend’s behavior?
I am 23 years old and have been living with my 25 year old boyfriend for a year. I moved in with him after I graduated college last year and was moving out of the dorms. It was his idea to ask me to move in with him and I agreed. His parent’s own the house we live in. He has always lived there rent free but when he had friends that lived there, they had to pay rent and everyone split the bills. When I moved in, I expected to have to pay rent but his parents decided to let me live there rent free also. He is still in college and graduates next month. He has had a good job but it is seasonal and from November to March he did not work and even though he said he looked for temporary jobs over that period of time, he only bartended at friends’ bars a few times (while being a full time student). He was able to pay his half of the bills (electric, water, etc.) until about January or February. Therefore, I paid the bills for about 3 months. I was alright with this because I understand his job is seasonal and that someday he may need to support if I get laid off, etc.

However, he does not help as much as I hope he would around the house. I do all the housework except he cleans the litter box, cooks dinner a lot (I’m not a good cook!) and he does the dishes sometimes. It would frustrate me when he was not working but yet he would still go to his friend’s house to play video games when I was working full-time, paying the bills, and cleaning the house. We have worked on the house since I moved in to improve it… also another way to pay his parents back for letting us live rent free. However, I do most of the improvements on the house and have paid for most of the rent, décor, etc. I have to beg him to do things such as fix the flooring, lighting, clean out the garage, etc.

Yesterday I asked him if he helped pay half the bills last month because I simply could not remember and though maybe he forgot to pay me as well. (I usually pay the bills and he writes me a check for half). He got defensive and said “Why would it matter if I didn’t” I was very shocked and asked what do you mean why would it matter? You think he would want to pay for half the bills to help his girlfriend out. Sometimes I wonder if he thinks I owe HIM for living rent free. I do not necessarily agree with this but think yes I do owe his parents and that’s why I have tried to fix up their house. His parents also have paid his car insurance, phone bill and everything else so he has no bills to pay. His parents also just bought him a brand new $22,000 car for college graduation. It frustrates me to think I have a boyfriend that just might be a freeloader but yet I wonder I would be the same way if my parents paid for everything.

My question is should I be upset because he doesn’t seem worried that I pay all the bills and because I do most of the housework? I sometimes think I should quit complaining because I do get to live rent free and try to remind myself that most guys don’t like to do housework so I can’t force him to do that. It is hard to talk about these things because when I bring up issues with him he gets defensive, seems upset, and does not talk about the subject.
Katzie – I agree with you, his parents have enable this behavior. But I wonder if I would be the same if my parents just handed me everything? But I think that I have more motivation than him and I have always tried to help my parents out by paying my college tuition, etc. So next question, is there anything I can do to show him how he needs to take more responsibility without seeming like a nagging girlfriend or making him be defensive?
One more thing.. sorry I keep adding details. He is always wanting new things… a new tv (which his parents bought us a $800 one for xmas), directv (which is more expensive than cable), tv stand, garage door, surrond sound.. His parents grew up not having much money so now they want to give them what they didnt have…

Open Question: What happens if someone does not have any money or assets to pay for an insurance settlement?
I received a settlement involving a car wreck that I was a passenger in. The driver hit a parked car, got a DUI, and had no insurance. I settled with my insurance company and now they have to get the money from him directly. What is going to happen to him because he has no money, no assets, and only student loans against him in his name?
My insurance covered me. He did not have insurance so my PIP insurance covered me and they paid me a settlement of $11500 and paid my medical. But now they have to get the money from him somehow, but he has no money, no job, no assets.

Open Question: Light exercising doesn’t seem to help with my gut, what else can I do?
In the past year or so, I have put on about 10-15 pounds; during this time, I was also in two near-fatal car accidents and spent some time in the hospital, not to mention in recovery on top of that; so during that time, I lost quite a bit of muscle mass.

I wasn’t huge and buff or anything, but I was athletically-built (especially considering I wasn’t into sports or anything) and toned.

Present-day, I’ve recognized that I have a gut. By far not a large one at all, but noticeable, especially not being toned anymore. The past two weeks, I’ve been jogging two miles a day, doing crunches and some light lifting (I’m still recovering a bit, so exerting myself gets me very fatigued very quickly due to my brain injury), and have noticed absolutely no difference – either in my energy level, or my physical appearance.

To top it all off, I more or less live in a state of poverty at present time, since my insurance company has paid me for basically nothing from the accidents, and I’m a university student needing to pay for tuition as-is; in other words, I’m broke. In other words, besides eating a good amount of fruits and vegetables (which I do), “healthy food” in the sense of ‘diet food’ and organic supplements (green drinks are expensive to make!), are out of the question. I can barely afford to buy myself milk and cereal on top of my other expenses.

What can I do about my physical condition? I’d like to lose a little weight and get back in shape…

FriendFeed Does it bother anybody else how Obama constantly talks about how his plan is to help “working Americans.” So are people who make $150,000 a year or more (or whatever the current cut off is now) NOT working Americans? Seems to me, most of these people are among some of the hardest working Americans we have!
