Open Question: How long will an accident from 2002 affect my car insurance in Ontario, Canada? ( Is it 10 years?)?
When will I finally have a “Clean” driving record and be able to go to another insurance company for a quote for lower insurance rates?
I’ve been driving like an old Granny since my accident in 2002, afraid to make even the slightest small accident, and always doing no more than 10 km/hr above the limit, but that doesn’t matter to the insurance company because a lady hit me in 2002.
In 2002 I was making a left turn and I saw a car coming so I stopped, but she didn’t and she slammed into the front of my stationary car. Still, I was told that I was partially at fault for making an un-safe left turn. That was way back in October 2002 and My car insurance is still at double the rate it was before the accident. ( Belair-direct car insurance ). I see that when I ask for quotes in Ontario, they always ask “Did you have any accidents in the past 10 years?” Three years ago they used to ask “Did you have any accidents in the past 7 years?”
Is this the norm, that each year they increase the withholding of your accidents? So in 10 years from now will they be asking “Did you have any accidents in the past 20 years?”
Open Question: I got rear-ended Friday, need advice?
On Friday on my way home from work I was stopped to turn left into my street, I was stopped and also the truck behind me was stopped completely for about 5 seconds before a third vehicle came up behind him and hit us without even using her brakes. I suffer from whiplash and was taken from the accident in the ambulance along with the driver of the truck.
The woman who rear ended the truck behind me basically admitted fault, it is even in the police report, so I am not worried about the determining fault portion, but do I go after the person who was driving the trucks insurance, or the woman who hit us?
Also, I need a rental car because I drive 50 miles each day to work, I do not have rental coverage on my policy, but should this be covered since I am in no way at fault?
I live in Massachusetts if the laws are different by state.
Open Question: I am being falsely accuse of a hit and run what do I do?
I was driving the speed limit on the right hand lane of a two lane street at approx 25 MPH ( in a 30 MPH) zone when a car pulled out in front of me from a driveway. I quickly moved into the left hand lane to avoid hitting the car. The car now infront of me hit the brakes and I slammed on my brakes to avoid hitting that car. I then got back in the right hand lane and make a right turn. After driving about 300 yards I noticed that a car was raciing up behind me. The car tried to cut me off. I was afaird and drove away as fast as I could.
five days letter, I got a car from the police department saying that they were investigating a hit and run. I told the police what happened. The person that made the complaint said that I had hit their car and ran away. I told the police that I was not aware that I had hit the car, but when I looked at my bumber I did notice a small scratch. The policeman said that the complaitntant said that there was a small scratch on their car and would have not made any complaint if I had just pulled over. But I really had no idea that I had even made contact. In fact I did not even know that the car who was chasing after me was the car that I had bumped. I told the policeman after heariing what the complaintent n said that If I did hit the car then II assumed that I must be at h fault because I was the one from behind I offered my insurance number and accepted responsibility. Two weeks later I was sent a summons to appear in court for a misdemeanor arraignment- California VC20002a hit and run driving and VC22350, Unsafe speed for prevailing conditions.
I have a spottless driving record.
Do I need a Lawyer?
I would hate to pay lots of money for a defense of an action that I was truely unaware that I had committed and yet offered to take responsibility for. AND I certainly don’t want to be found guilty of a misdemeanor charge.
I hope you can help

The government does not force you into the public library, or on a city bus, or play golf on public courses, or anything else deemed public. If you don’t do any of these activities you will not get fined or risk imprisonment. Also, most public services are provided and paid for at the local level. If you feel that your property taxes are too high you can move to a community with less services and lower taxes.
However, the federal healthcare bill FORCES you to buy health insurance, or you get fined and/or risk going to jail.
Thank you Tim, for bringing this up. Seems how that little tidbit is always forgotten when people make these things.
True, but I would also point out that it doesn’t cost everyone else in the public extra money if you don’t use those services. But if you aren’t insured and then go to the Emergency room and receive medical care that they are legally required to give you but that YOU CANNOT PAY FOR, it costs everybody money. That’s part of why hospital bills are so outrageous, you aren’t just paying for your care, you’re paying a few percentage points extra on everything to make up for all the uninsured who showed up, got care and couldn’t/wouldn’t pay.
So how about this as alternative for those so up in arms about this. No insurance for anybody, make insurance illegal. Strictly Cash and Carry health care, if you’ve been hit by a car, if you’re bleeding out, if you’re turning blue or have third degree burns all over your body. You better damn well have the cash to pay for your care on your person, or a credit card that’s not maxed out. Otherwise no care for you. It will keep taxes low and deaths high.
Are you also anti- mandatory car insurance? Or do you prefer to pay for the damage other people do to your car when you aren’t at fault?
I would also note that being as how this cartoon is about the public option and all, that no one will be forced to drop their insurance to use the Public Option. For those who aren’t insured who will have to get insurance, you can still get it from a private company… the public option isn’t required. That would be why it’s called an “option.”
There’s a long list of why insurance companies and hospitals are so expensive, but that’s not what we’re discussing. This also isn’t about car insurance or health insurance. It’s about the disregard and abuse of the Constitution, and the government forcing you to buy a good or service.
Would you like it if the government forced you to go to church?
It really is that simple and doesn’t need to go any further than that question. If the government can force you to buy health insurance (as the healthcare bill does), what else can they force you to do?
Wait until the Republicans are back in charge. What will they force you to do that you don’t like? Will they make abortion illegal? Will they force everybody to go to church?
The Democrats voted for that bill against the will of the people. Well, I guess the Republicans can do it too, right?
Catch my drift?
Forced by the government to buy a good or service? Like domestic wiretapping? Like an agency that appears to be mostly concerned with creating the illusion of security and widely despised as being nothing more than an exasperating inconvenience to air travelers? Like a $3,000,000,000,000 war?
We don’t text our hundreds of millions of issue-specific votes to Washington like American Idol. There were a lot of people against the abolition of slavery, the Civil Rights Act, and the creation of Medicare. Sometimes unpopular things turn out to have been the right things to have done. Sometimes popular things turn out to have been mistakes. Time tells.
And yes, someday the pendulum will swing. And swing again. That’s the will of the people. They elect representatives to act on their behalf. And regardless of who’s in the White House, Congress, and the Supreme Court, the federal government will forever continue to spend money on some things you don’t want or need. And some things you do.
In the conservative uproar over this healthcare legislation, I’ve heard a lot of vague concern about Constitutionality and a lot about slippery slopes. What I don’t often hear are numbers and sources, examples of the specific impact this legislation will have on the complainant’s life or family, or anything approaching a reasoned argument from the text of the legislation and of the Constitution itself.
