Open Question: teenager driver and car insurance?
my stepson just got his learner’s permit, he may be driving my husband’s truck once in a while to learn, (I think he’ll be driving mostly when he’s at his mom’s house), a mile here and a mile there. We have geico insurance, do we need to add him temporarily? i tried to look at our coverage and get a quote, but it won’t let me without actually adding him as a driver. i’m not about to add him without a quote since he’s only 16… way too young to be driving in my opinion, but that’s another issue…

Open Question: Does Young Drivers give you the cheapest car insurance rates?
I’ve heard that if you do Young Drivers of Canada as opposed to another ministry approved program you will receive even more of a car insurance discount than the normal one you receive for doing driver’s ed in the first place. Is this true? Because Young Drivers of Canada is very expensive compared to some of the other programs.

Open Question: How do I convince my parents to let me have a car?
I have just found the car I had been looking for for years: a 1989 Plymouth Reliant in very good state for only $500. I would go buy it right away if it were not for a small problem: my parents don’t want me to have a car. They think that young people should not have cars and it is somewhat of a taboo in my family to say I would be going to buy one. Sure as I’m 19 and live away from home I could just go buy it and not let them say a word buy that could result in a major diplomatic incident in the family.

I have plenty of money to buy it. As of right now I already have accumulated enough money to pay entirely for my next year of school. The purchase, plating, insurance etc. would cost approximately $1300, an amount of money I could easily earn before the end of the semester and during the summer, especially since having a car would make it a ton easier to get a job. I’m also going to school only part-time so I have plenty of time to work if it becomes necessary.

I live in the province of Quebec, Canada, which is the absolute heaven for young drivers. Insurance + plating would cost me about $480 per year and there are no mandatory inspections. I know that some people spend a ton of money on their cars but I wouldn’t do anything unnecessary on it.

I know it may be one of my last chances to find a K-car in good condition, since they are becoming increasingly rare.

Any advice on how to tell them I would buy that car without having them blow up or at least make them accept it?
I already know how to drive. As I’ve said, my insurance rates wouldn’t be very high ($480/year) because in Quebec it’s cheap for everyone.
